Summary:
The Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences in the newly established University of Houston College of Medicine invites applications for a faculty position in the field of community health and as a faculty member with qualitative research skills within the Humana Integrated Health System Sciences Institute. We are recruiting new faculty that have achieved excellence in education and research and are prepared to contribute to our bold vision (http://www.uh.edu/medicine/).
This faculty is expected to engage in collaborative research within the Institute, Department, College, and University, teach medical students, and, when appropriate, mentor junior faculty and students. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field such as community health, public health, health promotion, anthropology, psychology, or sociology with a track record as (or potential to be) an investigator on funded research studies and evidence of interactive, integrative, and cross-disciplinary teaching experience. Candidates are expected to participate in funded research through active collaboration with faculty members at the University of Houston. Candidates must have an interest in primary care research as well as one or more of the following additional areas: public health, population health, community health, health disparities, practice-based research networks, or practice transformation. Ideal candidates will also have expertise in one or more of the following: community-based participatory research, qualitative methods, mixed methods, culturally-informed research study design, and culturally-informed dissemination and implementation research.
The faculty member will be a critical force in planning, funding, promoting, and executing programs for the Department and Institute. The newly formed Institute has a mission to improve the value of healthcare, with a focus on primary care, through research, training, and community engagement.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Primary Responsibilities:
- Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences Faculty
- Supervising and executing relevant aspects of collaborative research projects, including question formulation, study design, study implementation, data analysis, and dissemination of results
- Supporting efforts to build partnerships with community stakeholders
- Securing extramural funding as a principal investigator or co-investigator
- Developing and teaching relevant sessions within the medical school curriculum, including community health, community engagement, health disparities, medical anthropology, and research design
- Participating in faculty, staff, and student mentoring
- Humana Institute Faculty Member With Qualitative Research Skills
- Participating in research, service, and educational activities that contribute to the mission of the Humana Institute
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in a relevant field including community health, public health, health promotion, anthropology, psychology, sociology or other relevant discipline
- Experience conducting focus groups, interviews, and analyzing qualitative data
- Evidence of scholarly productivity
- Teaching experience
- Track record of extramural funding as a principal investigator, co-investigator, or potential to obtain extramural funding
- Commitment to innovative approaches to education and learning
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with building partnerships across disciplines in pursuit of educational or research objectives·
- Experience using qualitative data analysis software such as ATLAS.ti or NVivo·
- Experience with cross-disciplinary teaching in an integrated medical curricula
- Experience teaching community health topics to health professions students
- Experience with student mentoring and advising
Full-Time: 1 FTE
Rank and salary commensurate with academic achievements and experience. At this time, all faculty appointments in the college of medicine are non-tenure track. The college of medicine anticipates being able to make tenure track positions available for application in the future.
