Job Title: Program Director: Medical Professionalism, Ethics, & Humanities Assistant/Associate Professor

Reports To: Assistant Dean for Curriculum, Academic Affairs

SUMMARY

The Program Director for Medical Professionalism, Ethics, & Humanities is an integral part of the curricular team at RowanSOM. The understanding and integration of professionalism and ethics is critical to the school’s mission of training “clinically skillful, compassionate and culturally competent physicians, ready to meet future healthcare workforce needs”. This position ensures best teaching and assessment practices through collaboration with faculty across the four year medical school curriculum and in the graduate medical education programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

• Collaborates with appropriate faculty including the Medical Scholarship and Community Service Learning and Leadership Directors to develops and implement the integration of biomedical ethics into the Rowan SOM curriculum
• Collaborates with appropriate faculty and divisions of Academic Affairs to develop and implement curricular components related to professionalism for the four year medical student curriculum
• Collaborates with appropriate faculty to develop and implement curricular components and/or courses in the medical humanities
• Contributes to education in biomedical ethics for interns, residents, fellows, and faculty
• Partner with the Assessment Division to complement best practices in the assessment of professionalism, medical ethics and medical humanities.
• Participates in the Medical Ethics Advisory Committee at the Jefferson Health System
• Facilitates small group learning in the traditional and problem based learning curriculum
• Serves on faculty and ad hoc committees as assigned
• Publishes in the field of biomedical ethics in peer reviewed journals, book chapters, and other scholarly works
• Seeks grant applications and/or other funding sources to advance biomedical education and research
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

PH.D, DO, MD, or JD degree with experience in teaching bio medical ethics is preferred. Experience in the social sciences, particularly medical anthropology and medical sociology would be beneficial. A Masters in biomedical ethics with 3 years of teaching experience in higher education will be considered. Clinical experience and publication history in bio ethics is desirable.
