  • Alcohol, Drug, and Tobacco Study Group

The Alcohol, Drug, and Tobacco Study Group (ADTSG) of the Society for Medical Anthropology requests submissions for the best graduate student paper in the anthropology of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco. Submissions from all anthropological subdisciplines are encouraged. Papers must be based on original data (including some fieldwork) and will be judged on the following criteria:
  • Richness of substantive or evidentiary materials
  • Clarity of anthropological methods
  • Linkage of work to social science literatures
  • Effective use of theory and data
  • Organization, quality of writing, and coherence of argument

The papers will be judged by a committee of ADTSG members. The author of the winning paper will receive a cash award of $250. The winner will be announced in Anthropology News and at the American Anthropological Association Annual Meetings.

  • Please submit an electronic copy to Peter Benson, Department of Anthropology, Washington University in St. Louis, at pbenson@artsci.wustl.edu. Please do not include identifying information in the essay itself. In the email, include your name, mailing address, email address, and school affiliation. Papers should be double-spaced, no more than 9,000 words, and references should be formatted in the American Anthropologist style. We will consider papers that have been published in the last twelve months or accepted for publication at time of submission. Multi-author papers are permitted, as long as a graduate student is the primary researcher and author. Questions may be directed to Peter Benson at the above email address.
