Proposed Session for SFAA: Sustaining Anthropological Engagement in Medical Schools

Anthropologists have been a part of medical school education on and off since the 1950s.  This session outlines the history of anthropology involvement, roles and influences in medical schools.  We explore the various ways in which anthropologists are currently engaged in medical education and the barriers to sustained involvement. Is the current resurgence of anthropology and other social sciences in medicine a sustainable trend?  How can anthropologists continue to have a significant impact in medical education?

The call is for a proposed session to be held at the Society for Applied Anthropology Meeting in Santa Fe, New Mexico March 28-April 1, 2017.  You must be registered for the meeting before your abstract may be submitted.  The session proposal is being organized by Iveris Martinez, Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University (FIU), and Dennis Wiedman, Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies at FIU.  If you care to join us as a presenter or discussant for this session contact Iveris Martinez at imartine@fiu.edu by October 6, 2016.
