Practicing Anthropologist

 

Pending budgetary approval, the Department of Anthropology at Wayne State University announces a full-time, tenured/tenure-track, open-rank Practicing Anthropology position beginning in the fall semester, 2018. We seek a dynamic and accomplished scholar with an active research agenda, teaching experience, and evidence of extensive work in applied and practicing anthropology. Desired specializations include, but are not limited to: design, environment, science/technology/society, education, heritage, health. Geographical area specialization is open, but we prefer someone who can complement existing expertise. Strength in race and structural inequalities is desired.

 

The successful candidate is expected to build on existing departmental and university-wide expertise by taking innovative approaches to the application of anthropology in solving contemporary problems. In particular, taking advantage of our location in Detroit and contributing to our “Anthropology of the City” initiative, the successful candidate should be able to establish a strong network of community collaborators. We seek a colleague who can work across the subfields, has experience with innovative pedagogy in applied education, and is committed to diversity and providing a multicultural learning environment.

 

The successful candidate will have a robust research program with a record of publication, a history of and potential for securing external funding, and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring. Specific teaching expectations are: to supervise a yearly practicum course, teach applied anthropology and methods, as well as introductory and Gen Ed courses offered by the department. Expertise in urban and in community-based participatory research is desirable.

 

The WSU Anthropology Department is an internationally recognized leader in applied anthropology. Wayne State, a premier urban research university, is located in the Detroit Cultural Center and serves a diverse student body. Minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and qualifications (Ph.D. in Anthropology required; all candidates who are ABD must have the degree in hand before August 19, 2018).
