Medical Anthropology at the Heart of Public Health and Biomedicine – a Symposium with Workshop SessionsJune 4th – 5th 2015 at the University of Basel, Switzerland
At this conference we are interested in the juxtaposition of medical anthropology with biomedicine and/or public health. We claim that the creation and creativity of anthropological knowledge changes significantly when conducted within biomedical or public health institutions compared to anthropological institutions. In order to grasp these changes theoretically we will present several case studies of medical anthropologists’ work within biomedicine/public health and will engage these in a critical discourse on the type of knowledge that is produced. Lecturers include pioneers of crossing the boundaries between medical anthropology and the biomedical health fields such as Susan C Scrimshaw (Sage Colleges New York) and Mitchell Weiss (Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute Basel) as well as Sylvie Fortin (University of Montreal) and Patricia Hudelson (University Hospital of Geneva).
The meeting is organized by Piet van Eeuwijk (University of Basel), Christine Holmberg (Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin), Corina Salis Gross (University of Bern), and Sylvie Schuster (University Hospital Basel).
