Lead Partner (Director), Practical Ethnographics
Ascension Health, the largest Catholic and non-profit health system in the United States, is seeking a dynamic, action-oriented medical or applied anthropologist to serve on the team of Transformational Development (TD), our internal innovation center. The TD team seeks to accelerate transformation in healthcare through the creation and testing of novel healthcare services and products which address unmet needs, challenge the status quo, and anticipate emerging trends and technologies.
The Lead Partner, Practical Ethnographics reports to the Managing Partner and bears primary responsibility for applying the appropriate mindsets, tools and methodologies to identify and address key unmet needs among those we serve. Accordingly, there are three primary areas of responsibility:
- Lead the understanding and application of appropriate mindsets and ethnographic methods to the work of the TD team;
- Lead the identification of new healthcare products or services which would better meet the health-related needs of key customer segments;
- Serve as a key member of the TD team, contributing capabilities and capacity as needed to promulgate the activities and success of the team and its members.
Given the nature of the work pursued within TD, there is flexibility around the location of this position. Ascension Health is based in St. Louis, Missouri and operates hospitals and clinics in over 20 states.
The successful candidate will offer a balance of academic training, practical experience, leadership skills and passion for healthcare transformation. Specifically,
- Doctoral degree in behavioral psychology, cultural anthropology, sociology or other equivalent social science training
- 10 years’ professional experience working in human-centered design, customer research, clinical psychology or other application of behavior-based social science to complex systems
- Professional passion for transforming healthcare delivery stemming from personal and/or family experience with the healthcare system
- Excellent listening and verbal communication skills in order to facilitate idea understanding and generation, specifically around the application of social science mindsets, tools and approaches to complex environments
- Ability to achieve objectives and stay committed to a course of action through various means and despite competing pressures, whether independently or collaboratively

Requirements: Battelle's Centers for Public Health Research and Evaluation (CPHRE) is seeking a Sr. Program Evaluator to provide technical leadership to public health program evaluation as well as to manage large evaluation contracts to conduct program assessments for U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) clients. Emphasis is placed on high quality technical and business planning activities. This position can be located in either CPHRE’s Atlanta, Georgia (highly preferred) or Arlington, Virginia offices.
Position Responsibilities: Serve as Project Director on competitive Task Order contracts with HHS agencies. Responsible for liaison with Project Officers and client technical staff, monitoring of performance on program assessments undertaken under task order contracts, trouble shooting and problem solving.
Provide technical leadership in evaluation on tasks under Task Order contracts, including consultation, training and technical assistance to Task Leaders as needed.
Organize and lead successful proposal efforts on significant contracts, and lead task orders under contracts as appropriate to background and technical skills.
Serve as a resource to Battelle management and staff on evaluation needs and the evaluation market in HHS agencies.
Publish in peer reviewed journals in area of specialization to maintain a national reputation.
Mentor staff in developing evaluation skills needed to serve clients.
Required Qualifications: An advanced degree (PhD, Dr.P.H. or MD/MPH) and at least 10 years experience in conducting program evaluations for government sector clients.
At least three years experience working in government contracting with one or more HHS agencies around programs and/or program evaluation and/or policy development.
At least three years experience in research management including monitoring and control of schedule and budget.
Evidence of strong evaluation skills with an understanding of both quantitative and qualitative methods and mixed methods in evaluation.
Solid record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national meetings.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work well in teams.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in conducting program evaluations for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) or the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA).

Position Description:
Community Based Research Team Leader(CBR-TL) position is a member of the National Capacity Building Assistance (CBA) Program and leads community based health research within the program related to program interventions, social marketing interventions and provides overall program evaluation support to the National CBA program. The position will also support planning of research activities within the department. The CBR-TL position will report to the National Program Manager. Some weekend work and travel required. This position is housed in the Community Development & External Affairs Department.
Major Responsibilities:
Provide technical expertise and assistance to community-based organizations to strengthen their prevention programs serving A&PIs on scientific program effectiveness, which includes consultation, training, and technology transfer of science to practice
Lead evaluation projects to assess program interventions for their effectiveness on culturally competent health promotion and care for A&PIs
Documentation projects include: program best practices, program models, cultural competence guides and case studies for publication
Formative research projects on evaluation of national social marketing campaigns
Provide technical support to the National HIV capacity building program in the US and Pacific Island Jurisdictions
Support planning of research activities in the department
Represent the agency at public events and conferences
Support related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in social sciences or related fields. Alternately a master's degree in public health, epidemiology, social sciences or related field with 5 years experience conducting research (formative research, monitoring and evaluation) in health preferably HIV/AIDS.
2 years of proven experience working on HIV or health related issues
2 years of experience working with Asian & Pacific Islanders or other communities of color
1 year track record of working with community-based organizations
Sensitivity to non-profit culture and government funding
Ability to work effectively with diverse organizations, groups and individuals serving A&PI communities
Strong interpersonal communication and writing skills, with sensitivity to appropriate delivery depending on target and audience
Ability to work independently and in a team setting
Essential Mental Functions:
Research, examine, and understand data and have the ability to think and communicate effectively and creatively.
Essential Physical Functions:
Occasional to frequent travels to off-site locations such as bars, clubs, street alleys, etc, environments can be unpleasant with high noise levels, violent or aggressive people and exposure to extreme heat or cold. Hours of work are beyond regular work schedule. Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects up to 30 lbs.
