Director, Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, the world’s largest medical research facility, is seeking applications from exceptional candidates for the challenging position of Director, Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR). The Director, who also functions as the NIH Associate Director for Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, serves as the NIH focal point for establishing agency-wide policies and goals in behavioral and social sciences research, coordinates the activities undertaken in the performance of this research, and provides advice and staff support to the NIH Director, Deputy Director, and Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives within the Office of the Director. The OBSSR employs approximately 14 full time positions: 9 scientific staff, 2 program analysts, 1 communications specialist, and 2 support staff, and has an FY 2009 estimated budget of more than $26M. Qualitative Researcher: Brooklyn District Health Office, NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene
The Brooklyn District Public Health Office of the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene is seeking a Qualitative Researcher. The Brooklyn District Public Health Office (DPHO) targets activities to North and Central Brooklyn, whose residents bear a disproportionate burden of illness and premature death compared with those of other NYC neighborhoods. The guiding principle of the DPHOs is to reduce disparities in New York’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. Our research team conducts studies to learn about local residents’ health/sociocultural practices and neighborhood conditions, using ethnographic and other qualitative research methods. Our goal is to identify innovative approaches to public health, to guide our strategies, programs and health campaigns, and to foster dialogue and collaboration among our neighborhood partners, including residents and staff of local organizations: hospitals and clinics, schools, religious institutions, businesses, and other government agencies.
The Qualitative Researcher will conduct studies in collaboration with DPHO researchers and other Department of Health & Mental Hygiene bureaus (e.g., Chronic Disease; Maternal, Infant, & Reproductive Health; Mental Health). Responsibilities include: design and refine interview instruments; recruit study participants and conduct research (individual/group interviews, participant observation, and photo documentary); analyze data and develop findings and recommendations for program strategy and development; write reports, grants, articles, and health promotion materials; and provide technical assistance to local community-based organizations. The Qualitative Researcher will work with the Director of Qualitative Research. The salary for the position is $58,859 to $73,871.
Preferred Qualifications: Graduate degree in the social sciences (anthropology, sociology), public health, or a related field. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong analytic skills. Keen interest in the sociocultural dimensions of health.
