Rationale:
We are seeking an experienced senior level applied social scientist to join the faculty of the Social and Behavioral Interventions Program in the Department of International Health, the largest and most renowned department of its kind.
The Department of International Health has a large portfolio of international research and teaching that draws on applied social science methodologies and theories. This portfolio comprises work related to the Department’s traditional focus in applying behavior change methodologies to prevent and control infectious diseases, address maternal and child health in low and middle income countries. as well as work related to emerging public health problems including violence and abuse (prevention and care for survivors), mental health, refugee health, obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. There is also increasing demand for expertise in applied social science theory and methods across the Department.
Future Prospects:
The ideal candidate will strengthen the ability of the Social and Behavioral Interventions Program and other Department Programs to compete for funding across a wide range of grants, especially for training grants and center programs that require experienced senior faculty members in leadership positions. The candidate will also make connections and build collaborations with other groups and Centers, within and outside of the department, with related interests in behavior change and the social and behavioral determinants of health. Within the Department of International Health these could include collaborations with the Global Center on Childhood Obesity, the Center for American Indian Health and the International Injury Research Unit among others. Extra-departmental connections and collaborations might include the Departments of Health, Behavior and Society, Health Policy and Management, Anthropology, and Sociology, as well as the Center for Global Health, the Center for a Livable Future, the Johns Hopkins Water Institute, the Energy, Environment, Sustainability and Health Institute, Center for Adolescent Health, the Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions, and the Center for Public Health and Human Rights.
Roles and Responsibilities:
In addition to the evaluation and research work, the faculty member would teach at least one course and one seminar on the applications of social science theory and methods in public health. This would be complementary to existing core courses taught by the Social and Behavioral Interventions Program. The faculty member would also be expected to mentor and advise junior faculty and transition into an overall leadership role within the program.
Required Skills and Experience:
The need is for a highly experienced applied psychologist, sociologist, social epidemiologist, economist, anthropologist or social sciences-oriented public health researcher with skills and experience in both qualitative and quantitative methods. The candidate should have experience in teaching at the graduate level, advising and mentoring doctoral students and junior faculty and a history of diverse and productive scientific and/or policy collaborations. The ideal candidate should also have experience as a Principal Investigator on federally-funded grants and have a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, and other publications (books, manuals, programmatic guidelines, policies etc.).
Educational Background:
Ph.D. in a social science or public health discipline
Strong publication record in peer reviewed journals (at least 25 peer-reviewed manuscripts)
Strong background in securing extramural funding
