Field:         Social scientist (Psychology, sociology, economics or anthropology) with applied focus, or public health researcher with training on application of social science methods and theories (e.g. qualitative and formative research, mixed methods research, health behavior change, communication, social and economic determinants of health)

 

Rationale:   We are looking for an experienced applied social scientist to join the Social and Behavioral Sciences faculty in the Department of International Health, the largest and most renowned department of its kind.

The Department of International Health has a large portfolio of international research and teaching that draws on  applied social science methodologies and theories.  This portfolio comprises work related to the Department’s traditional focus on preventing and controlling infectious diseases and addressing maternal and child health in low and middle income countries, as well as work related to emerging public health problems including violence and abuse (prevention and care for survivors), mental health, refugee health, obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases.

At the same time that there is increasing demand for expertise in applied social science theory and methods across the Department.

 

Future Prospects:    The ideal candidate will strengthen the ability of the Social and Behavioral Interventions Program and other Department Programs to compete for funding across a wide range of grants, especially for training grants and center programs that require experienced senior faculty members in leadership positions. The candidate will also make connections and build collaborations with other groups and Centers with related interests in behavior change and the social and behavior determinants of health, both 1) within the Department of International Health such as the Global Center on Childhood Obesity, the Center for American Indian Health and the International Injury Research Unit; and 2) outside the Department such as the Center for Global Health, the Center for a Livable Future, Center for Adolescent Health, the Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions and the Center for Public Health and Human Rights.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:    In addition to the evaluation and research work, the faculty member would teach at least one course and one seminar on the applications of social science theory and methods in public health. This would be complementary to existing core courses taught by the Social and Behavioral Interventions Program.

 

Required Skills and Experience:    The need is for a highly experienced applied psychologist, sociologist, economist, anthropologist or public health  researcher with skills and experience in both qualitative and quantitative methods. The candidate should have experience in advising and mentoring doctoral students and junior faculty.

 

Educational Background:

PhD in a social science or public health discipline

Strong publication record in peer reviewed journals

Strong background in securing extramural funding
