The Department of Sociology & Anthropology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for a faculty appointment in medical anthropology to begin Fall 2015. Rank is open. We seek candidates with geographic specialization in the US-Mexico borderland and/or Latin America. Research interests in the areas of environmental health, health disparities, Latino farm workers, and public health are preferred. Experience collaborating with community healthcare agencies or medical schools is a plus. In addition to courses in medical anthropology, applicants must be able to teach introductory courses in cultural anthropology. The candidate will have an active research agenda, be committed to quality undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring, and engage in service. Prospects for effective teaching and development of a successful anthropological research agenda that involves publication, external grants, and community and student engagement are critical criteria in the selection process.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, a Hispanic serving institution, will open its doors in Fall 2015. UTRGV was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 and brings together the assets and resources of UT Pan American and UT Brownsville. UTRGV is expected to serve over 30,000 students. The new university will also be home to a School of Medicine that will open in 2016. UTRGV is in the middle of one of the fastest growing areas in the nation, the southern tip of Texas known as the Rio Grande Valley.
UTRGV has a 5-year NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant to increase the representation of women in the faculty and leadership of STEM fields (which includes anthropology) and to promote a positive, family friendly work environment. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching and/or service. Applicants should address their ability to work collaboratively and their commitment to supporting the excellence of all students on campus.
Applicants must have an earned doctorate in anthropology from an accredited institution by September 1, 2015. ABDs may be considered, but a conferred doctorate bySeptember 1, 2015 is required for appointment at the rank of assistant professor. Official transcripts in support of all earned degrees will be required for candidates who receive verbal offers.
