The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, Division of Extramural Research (DER).  NIDA is a national and international leader in drug abuse and addiction research.  The DER Director position offers an exciting opportunity for scientific and managerial leadership in developing and implementing extramural research programs in support of NIDA’s mission.  The Division of Extramural Research manages funding programs in support of drug abuse and addiction research.  The DER Director oversees the execution of approximately $775 million for about 2,000 research grants through Funding Opportunity Announcements and research training programs. To carry out its mission, the Division has a staff of approximately 36 employees and an annual budget of approximately $2.4 million. The DER Director provides executive and managerial leadership in setting scientific priorities, making program decisions, developing and implementing policy, and determining the allocation of significant NIDA resources.  The successful candidate leads, directs, and manages multiple programs involving the peer review of research applications, management of extramural research funding, management of grants administration, and technical review of research proposals and activities.  The DER Director also works collaboratively across the NIH, with other federal agencies, and with key stakeholders and organizations to further the Institute’s mission and objectives.  The ideal candidate is a key member of the NIDA leadership team and represents NIDA’s extramural program to the drug abuse research community.

 

Required Qualifications: The successful candidate will have an established reputation as an expert and leader among the drug abuse research community.  The ideal candidate must also have demonstrated broad visionary capabilities in their scientific focus area(s) and ability to manage personnel, budgets, and timelines across multiple fiscal years. Applicants must possess an M.D., and/or Ph.D. degree in health or allied sciences relevant to the position and must have senior-level scientific research experience and outstanding knowledge of at least one of the scientific areas identified in NIDA’s strategic plan.
