Research Interests: My dissertation examines the various forms of incorporating biomedical knowledge of aging through moral discourses, technological enhancements and medical practicalities of the so-called 'lifestyle-related diseases' (seikatsu shukan byo). Conducting ethnographic fieldwork in clinical settings and health care facililties, I am looking at the everyday struggles of patients suffering from diabetes (and other chronic diseases), a rapidly growing health care issue in contemporary Japan. I focus on pathologies and practicalities of chronic conditions in Japan by examining how the decay of the human body is attended, conceptualized, and enacted in medical practice and popular health culture.
