Culture and Community Health in Oaxaca, Mexico is a 4.5 week service and education program with a strong base in medical anthropology. Peter Guarnaccia (Rutgers University), who has been very active in medical anthropology for over 30 years, is the Program Director. The program consists of a weekly seminar on the medical anthropology of Mexico, service placements in a range of community health settings, Spanish classes with an emphasis on medical Spanish, weekly reflection sessions, homestays with Mexican families and cultural excursions to healing, craft, and cultural centers. An intermediate level of Spanish is strongly recommended, but not required. The program receives 6 credits from Rutgers Global Education: 3 in Community Health in Oaxaca that often qualifies as a medical anthropology elective and 3 in Medical Spanish (there is some flexibility in how these credits are applied).
