SMA awards
The SMA as a whole is involved in several annual prizes. Click on each for announcements and deadlines:
The MASA Dissertation Award will be given on an annual basis to a scholar whose dissertation is judged to be the most significant and potentially influential contribution to medical anthropology.
The New Millennium Book Award will be given to the author whose work is judged to be the most significant and potentially influential contribution to medical anthropology.
The Eileen Basker Memorial Prize, which includes an award of $500 - $1000, is given yearly for a large-scale work representing superior research in the area of gender and health.
The WHR Rivers Undergraduate Student Paper Prize Competition, the Charles Hughes Graduate Student Paper Prize Competition, and the Steven Polgar Professional Paper Prize Competition, created in honor of three anthropologists who pioneered investigation of relationships between culture, social structure, biology, ecology, and health and illness, also are awarded yearly. Winners of these competitions also receive cash awards.
The Career Achievement Award honors an individual who has advanced the field of medical anthropology through career-long contributions to theory and/or method, and who has been successful in communicating the relevance of medical anthropology to broader publics.
The George Foster Practicing Medical Anthropology Award recognizes those who have made significant contributions to applying theory and methods in medical anthropology, particularly in diverse contexts, to multidisciplinary audiences, and with some impact on policy.
The Annual Graduate Student Mentor Award recognizes excellence in graduate student mentorship and acknowledge the important contributions of medical anthropologists who have provided exceptional guidance and outstanding support to graduate students in this field.
