General Statement of Duties

The Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Department at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts invites applications for a tenure-track position in anthropology at the Assistant Professor level beginning September 1, 2016. Our interdisciplinary department has eight full-time faculty members and approximately 150 sociology majors, many of whom minor in  social work or anthropology.

Candidates must be committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching and possess collaborative and cooperative skills to work well with other faculty and staff within the department, as well as with other disciplines. Teaching load will include introductory cultural anthropology, peoples of (the candidate’s culture area) and other upper level courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise within medical anthropology.

We encourage candidates with a focus in one or more of the following areas to apply: public health/community health/global health/health inequalities; environmental justice; mental health/illness/ community psychiatry; fertility and infertility, childbirth, reproduction, assisted reproduction; migrant health; veterans’ issues. Will offer some courses cross-listed in the Biology Department’s major in Community Health. Must have demonstrated ability to teach a culture area other than that of China or the Middle East.

The successful candidate will teach four courses per semester; recruit, advise and mentor students; participate in the shared governance process including departmental and committee work; and maintain a personal scholarship agenda. This position is contingent on final budgetary approval.

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in cultural or medical anthropology
  • Teaching experience in a liberal arts college preferred
