Degree and Area of Specialization:
Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate required. Relevant disciplinary backgrounds may include community psychology, public health, design, urban planning, human ecology, and other interdisciplinary programs such as environmental studies, organizational or community development.

The School of Human Ecology (SoHE) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW–Madison) is seeking applicants for a tenure-track (assistant or associate) professor of sustainable community systems. We intend to hire an innovative scholar whose research, teaching, and outreach advances our School’s goals of promoting community sustainability and individual and family well-being. We are interested in participatory and action-oriented research. We expect the candidate to build collaborative partnerships with campus communities whose focus is on sustainability as well as local communities, voluntary/nonprofit organizations, and/or entrepreneurs working to address issues of sustainability. We define sustainable systems broadly to include: food systems, community development, craft and products, space/urban design, transportation, housing, financial security, community and organizational capacity, and issues of environmental justice and health equity. We seek researchers with breakthrough ideas and engaged scholarship that advance changes in policies and systems to promote environmental, social, and economic sustainability. We seek candidates who partner with groups that are directly or disproportionately affected by lack of sustainability (e.g., racial/ethnic minorities, poor/disadvantaged, women, children and youth). The candidate’s orientation should complement the SoHE’s transdisciplinary and participatory approach to understanding and promoting individual, family and community well-being.
Previous research, instruction, and outreach experience and/or education that indicate strong potential for teaching and engaged scholarship are desirable. Rank will be commensurate with experience.

The selected candidate will join the faculty of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in the SoHE. The Department is home to a Ph.D. program in Civil Society & Community Research (http://www.sohe.wisc.edu/is/is-graduate-overview-of-degrees.htm ) and an undergraduate major in Community & Nonprofit Leadership (http://pubs.wisc.edu/ug/sohe_interdis_nonprofit.htm). It is also the administrative home for the campus-wide Center for Nonprofits (http://centerfornonprofits.wisc.edu). The SoHE has strong connections to University of Wisconsin–Extension (http://www.uwex.edu ) statewide, and offers an excellent opportunity for building community partnerships. We seek candidates whose program of research, teaching, and outreach can also contribute to one or more of the other programs in the SoHE (e.g., Consumer Science http://www.sohe.wisc.edu/cs/index.htm, Design Studies http://www.sohe.wisc.edu/etd/, or Human Development & Family Studies http://www.sohe.wisc.edu/hdfs/index.htm ). The UW-Madison is also a home to the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies (http://www.nelson.wisc.edu ), the Global Health Institute (http://ghi.wisc.edu), and the Office of Sustainability (http://sustainability.wisc.edu ), which are providing leadership on sustainability issues.
