Program information:

  • Medical and Psychiatric Anthropology is one area of specialization within our Graduate Programme in Social Anthropology offering degrees at both the M.A. and Ph.D. levels. We are committed to critical, engaged, community-based theory and research with particular emphasis on policy and advocacy implications. Our faculty expertise includes the anthropology of health and the body, disability studies, international health, nutritional anthropology, psychiatric anthropology, and women's health. The principal focus of teaching and research in the Programme is the Social Anthropology of Complex Societies.
  • Numerous complementary faculty and resources are available both at York University and in the greater Toronto region. For example, at York we have the Graduate Programmes in Psychology, Social and Political Thought, Sociology (Health & Illness Network), Kinesiology and Health Sciences. Relevant work is also done through the York Centre for Health Studies, Centre for Refugee Studies, Centre for Feminist Research, Centre of Excellence in Women's Health (Environment and Women's Health), Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the on-campus headquarters of the Canadian Association for Community Living (Mental Retardation). Resources in Toronto include the programme in Culture, Community, and Health housed at the Clarke Division of Psychiatry (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) and the Hong Fook Mental Health Services.
