Program information:
- The Department of Anthropology offers a Master of Arts degree in Medical Anthropology. This tract combines theoretical training with practical experience in medically related fields for applied anthropologists interested in health and health care issues. Training encompasses both western and traditional forms of health care and examines issues of policy formation and implementation. Practicums (in place of a Master's Thesis) provide an opportunity to apply specialized knowledge within a variety of health-related contexts. The department involves, at various times, both students and faculty in local, regional, national and international health care research.
- Students complete a minimum of thirty semester hours of course work plus satisfactory performance in a practicum for six hours of credit. This is a total of thirty-six hours of course work in cultural and biocultural anthropology, research methods, anthropological data analysis, medical anthropology, and a variety of specialized topics including mental health, nutrition, childbirth and reproductive health, alcoholism, ethnomedicine, epidemiology and forensic anthropology. The student's practicum will be in a public or private sector agency on issues of health and health service delivery.
Requirements for Admission:
- Admission to both the Graduate School and the department is required. To meet departmental requirements for admission, students must submit a letter of intent and three letters of recommendation and must complete the GRE. In addition to their undergraduate academic record, applicants will be considered on the basis of their GRE scores, work experience, and career plans as described in the letter of intent. Except in exceptional circumstances, students should have a 3.0 undergraduate GPA record and at least 450 scores in each of the verbal and quantitative GRE categories.
- Admission to the program is not automatic upon meeting minimum departmental admission requirements. Students are selected from the pool of qualified applicants and the number selected depends on the availability of adequate faculty supervision.
- Note: Deadline for completion of submission is April 1 for the following fall semester and November 13 for the following spring semester. Summer school admission must be completed by May 1 for entrance into the Graduate School and the departmental program. Late submissions may, in exceptional circumstances, be considered on an individual basis, but will normally be deferred to the following semester.
- Medical Anthropology Resources and Facilities: Anthropological Research Center publication series; Center for Urban Research and Extension (CURE); GIS and computer laboratory facilities; LMS files; HRAF microcards; and Qualitative Methods laboratory.
- Graduate Student Support Available: Twenty graduate assistantships and/or teaching assistantships yearly; also, field and lab jobs, research assistantships; practicum employment through city, county, and private agencies.
