Program information:
The Graduate Program in the Anthropology of Medicine consists of M.A. studies offered jointly by the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Social Studies of Medicine, an interdisciplinary department located in the School of Medicine. The M.A. Degree is awarded by the Department of Anthropology. Following the award of the M.A., students may specialize in the anthropology of medicine within the regular Ph.D. programme of the Department of Anthropology. There is also a joint MD/Ph.D program in which students do sequential studies of anthropology and medicine.
Faculty research interests include the anthropology of the body, psychiatric anthropology, the technologies of clinical science and medical science, the anthropology of medical knowledge, and the anthropology of life cycle transitions; regional interests include Asia (especially Japan), Africa, and North America.
The language of instruction is English.
Students enrolled in the Anthropology of Medicine programme may also participate in the meetings and professional activities of the Division of Transcultural Psychiatry (Department of Psychiatry). The journal Transcultural Psychiatry is housed in the Division. Students are drawn from a variety of academic backgrounds: anthropology and related social sciences, the medical sciences, the health professions, and the humanities. A small number of students will be admitted to the programme each year. Since the aim of the programme is to prepare candidates for careers in research and university-level teaching, preference is given to applicants with the ability and motivation to undertake and complete doctoral level studies.
