Program information:
Medical anthropology at the University of Manitoba is broadly defined as the biocultural study of health and disease, illness and illness behavior, and sickness and the sick role in human families and populations. The Department of Anthropology is currently able to provide graduate programming and supervision at the MA and PhD levels in each of these domains. Expertise is available, through departmental and affiliated faculty, to deliver programs in the following areas:
- the population biology of human disease including demographic, genetic, and epidemiologic emphases;
- the anthropology of illness and of sickness, usually from a sociocultural perspective;
- the ecological and comparative study of "medical" or health systems as cultural systems;
- applied medical anthropology.
Requirements for MA Thesis MA: 24 credit hours of graduate coursework in anthropology and/or related fields and a thesis proposal, research, thesis defense.
Requirements for PhD (MA degree in anthropology is normally required): 24 credit hours of graduate coursework beyond the MA, 1 language, written and oral examinations covering three specializations, proposal defense, original research, thesis defense.
