Program information:
The Medical Anthropology program at the University of South Florida provides education and training for students in both Masters and Doctoral programs. The program emphasizes applied research and draws on the broad range of faculty expertise in international health, nutritional anthropology, policy analysis, forensic and genetic anthropology, child and maternal health and HIV-AIDS. In addition to the departmental faculty, the University of South Florida has access to faculty from USF's College of Public Health and College of Medicine. The Caribbean, Central and South America, as well as the US, are the primary geographic foci for faculty research including research projects in Cuba, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti, Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia. The University of South Florida's Medical Anthropology Program requires an internship for students in the Masters Program; students in the Doctoral Program can choose either an internship experience or a more traditional research experience. Doctoral students are required to master a substantive area external to anthropology but related to their dissertation topic as part of their degree program. Financial assistance is available through the USF Graduate School, the Department , and assistantships are often available through the Veterans Administration, the College of Nursing, Medicine, Public Health, and the Florida Mental Health Institute. We are in the process of instituting a dual-degree program with the College of Public Health.
