PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
East Carolina University emphasizes the biocultural approach to health and disease. All students complete core courses in the subfields of cultural, archaeology and biological anthropology as well as in research design. Students then choose elective courses in their area of specialty. The emphasis in the medical track is on applied training to prepare students for job placements or further graduate study. Students can take courses in the MPH program at ECU (http://www.ecu.edu/mph/)and have the
option of learning biostatistical, quantitative or qualitative research methods. Depending upon student goals, the program offers a thesis or internship option. Faculty have ongoing research interests in African American health status and diet, the design of culturally appropriate health interventions, community-based health advocacy, Hispanic migrant health and food security, adolescent obesity, rural aging and health issues, women's reproductive health, occupational health, medical decision making and alternative medical practices.
