Program information:
The Department of Anthropology at the University of Colorado-Denver offers a multisubdisciplinary master's degree concentration in medical anthropology. Anthropology faculty also participate in the Ph.D. program in Health and Behavioral Sciences, an interdisciplinary degree program presently housed in the Department of Anthropology. Faculty research encompasses the full range of biological, biocultural, cultural and applied dimensions of medical anthropology. The program features standard classroom training, internship and "service learning" opportunities, and faculty-guided research. Research opportunities are available in urban Denver, rural Colorado, Bolivia, China (Taiwan and mainland), Russia, and Mongolia.
Students complete a core curriculum which includes a series of theory and methods courses in at least three of the four fields of anthropology. Subsequent to completion of the core, students enroll in the core medical anthropology courses: "The Biocultural Basis of Health", and "Comparative Health Systems." Electives include courses in applied anthropology, culture change, community, human ecology, and human biology. Students are especially encouraged to take epidemiology and biostatistics courses offered through the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, also located in Denver.
Advanced training in medical anthropology is available in the context of the Ph.D. in Health and Behavioral Sciences. Students may apply either directly the Health and Behavioral Sciences Program, or to the graduate program in Anthropology. Inquiries may be addressed to either program.
